What I Read

The last 2 weeks I haven’t been reading much at all! I started getting back into running consistenly, and studying Spanish … but then dropped posting consistently twice per week here, and not reading. It was also due in part to not feeling any of the books I picked up to read or listen to. But, balance is being restored, as here I am posting, and I finally finished the last 2 books on the The 15 Novellas Nominated for 2026 Locus, Nebula and Hugo Awards – The Death of Mountains, Jordan Kurella and The Lives of Bitter Rain, Adrian Tchaikovsky. I thought they were both … okay … but not particularly memorable.

Currently Reading

One of my summer reading side quests, is to do 5 minute non-fiction mornings 2-3x a week. The book that I’m listening to (and reading) is Fluent Forever (How to Learn Any Language Fast and Never Forget It), Gabriel Wyner. It discusses tips for how to effectively study and retain a language.

I also just started the audiobook of Love by the Book, Jessica Gerorge. It explores explores the restorative nature of female friendship and the life-changing power of platonic love. I read the author’s previous (debut) novel, Maame, and loved it.

⮕ I don’t have a huge book collection, but this year, I decided I wanted to buy and read more physical books … and now I’m rethinking that, especially after reading How and Why to Cull Your Book Collection … #9 there will always be more books. Yikes! There will not always be more room.

⮕ Brittle Paper just released the FREE African Horror: An Anthology! “From Nigeria, Zambia, South Africa, Kenya, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe, our writers have each taken a turn at the campfire, sharing tales.” Y’all … I cannot wait to dive in.

⮕ What are the best books you’ve read this year so far? I shared mine in The Mid Year Book Freak Out [2026 Edition], and here’s Book Riot’s The Best Books of 2026 (So Far).

⮕ I enjoy seeing what authors are reading, so Jo Walton’s Reading List is a favorite of mine to peruse. She’s also a prolific reader and her reading wrapup is usually monthly (sometimes bimonthly).

⮕ It’s 20 Books of Summer ’26: The Half-way Check-in! I posted the books I was planning to read on My Summer 2026 Reading List for #20BooksofSummer, #SummerofHorror and #BigBookSummer … so far, I’ve gotten to 5 books and 7 novellas – so 12 total.

⮕ The winners of the 2025 Shirley Jackson Awards for outstanding achievement in horror, psychological suspense, and dark fantasy fiction were recently announced. Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng, Kylie Lee Baker won for Best Novel … that’s quite a unique title. It was already on my to be read list!

⮕ A New Name for The International Booker Prize … it will henceforth be known as the Bukhman International Booker Prize, in honor of the grant-giving organisation that has committed to funding the next ten years of the prize. The prize fund for the winning title will also double in value from £50,000 to £100,000, split equally between the author and translator.

⮕ Publishers Are Preparing to Opt Out of Google Search and A group of three publishers, plus author Scott Turow, Launch New Lawsuit Against Google for Using Digital Books to Train AI.
