How has your week been? What have you been reading? I recently finished Starling House, Alix E. Horrow which kept me spellbound the entire time I was reading it. It’s the kind of horror novel I like – deliciously creepy, but not too intense that I can’t sleep at night. Now, on to the 10+ things I bookmarked recently.
one+ Sep. 15 – Oct. 15, 2024 is Hispanic Heritage Month and if you’re celebrating by reading more books by Hispanic authors, check out Books for Hispanic Heritage Month 2024 and New Books to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month which has a 84 recommendations of books published within the last 5 years. Check out Tender is the Flesh, Agustina Bazterrica, for an unforgettable, weird dytopian horror book.
two+ On LitHub’s Ultimate Fall 2024 Reading List, they combed through 27 lists of book recommendations (a total of 464 books) and collated the results to find the 78 books that were recommended three times or more. Intermezzo, Sally Rooney is the #1 most often recommended book.
three+ Which of these 50 Best Book Podcasts are you listening to? I still am not really into podcasts yet – so tell me, should I be? Am I missing out?
four+ In the last book I read, Starling House, the house itself was significant. Here are some more Psychological Thrillers In Which Houses Have Secrets Of Their Own.
five+ It seems like it has rained for the last 100 days in Florida, but last week we had a break off from a tropical storm and everything flooded, plus a crocodile ended up on the beach. That got me thinking about adding some climate fiction books to my reading list and I came across, Compelling Climate Fiction To Read Before It Becomes Nonfiction and Climate Fiction To Start Reading … and The Definitive Climate Fiction Reading List. One book from these lists that I highly recommend is How Beautiful We Were, Imbolo Mbue. The story tells of the people of the fictional African village of Kosawa, that’s affected by the oil pipelines that run through it (let’s call this *fiction* based on real life).
six+ Ooh the latest Am I the Literary Asshole? What if … I don’t want to hang out with my fans, someone I know ripped into my literary submission (without them knowing it was mine), I keep sending friends articles and they barely respond (did they even read it??!) … who is the a$$hat in these situations?
seven+ Every time I see something like this beautiful All She Wrote’s Reading Journal I want to do something similar … until the reality of the little time I have sets in. So far, I’m satisfied with using Storygraph to track reading challenges, and Goodreads to track read books.
eight+ Off the Books, What are you watching? I recently watched Elsbeth S01 and I really enjoyed the quirky character of Elsbeth and her new role as a lawyer/investigator with the NYPD. Elsbeth is a spin-off from The Good Fight, which is a spin-off of The Good Wife!
nine+ Also check out Books Adaptations Win at the 2024 Emmys. Shogun and Baby Reindeer taking home multiple awards. I mentioned Baby Reindeer a while back (it is a “what the f**% is this and I can’t stop watching although I want to” kind of show), but have yet to watch Shogun. Am I missing out? I’m headed to Japan next weekend for vacation, which means a 13 hour flight. I looked through The most popular bingeworthy TV shows right now on Netflix, Apple TV+, Hulu, Prime Video and more and downloaded a few to watch.
ten+ In case you missed it, I recently published 4 Books on My RIP XIX Reading List and 3 Awesome Books With Time Travel, and Kim shared 8 Graphic Novels Perfect for your Fall Reading Lists.
—- Cheers to the weekend and week ahead!
