What I Read

bold but not too bold book

Of course I’m still working through the 15 Novellas Nominated for 2026 Locus, Nebula and Hugo Awards, and I completed 1 more, Bold But Not Too Bold, Hache Pueyo. It was a delight to read this weird horror story. There’s a gigantic old spider who is moody and prone to temper tantrums, but still longs for belonging. Someone in her household stole something from her, and the new keeper of the keys has to find out who did it before she meets the same fate as the old one. The author told the story well and there’s a mystery to keep things even more interesting.

I’ve continued wtih books from my #summerreading list, and enjoying leaning into a Summer of Horror so I read American Rapture, C.J. Leede. This book hit different and I was soooo into it. The story started out slowly and benignly as we learn about Sophie, her strict Christian upbringing, and how it shapes her view of the World. She is close to her brother, but he’s no longer around. Then there’s a viral outbreak which is causing people to do strange things – they get lustful and dangerous. The pacing of the story is spot on, and it ramps up as Sophie is thrust violently into a world that’s gone mad … and that she’s ill prepared to deal with. The savagery is brutal and this author makes it so vivid and real.

the god of the woods

With all the travel time I had this week, I also finished book The God of the Woods, Liz Moore, a #bigbooksummer read at 478 pages. This is an intricate, complex mystery told from different points of view, and with shifting timelines from the past, when the son of the Van Laar family disappeared, and the present (14 years later), when the daughter disappears. The author does well with getting us to know all the characters in the story, and again, she took us through a maze for this mystery, but I enjoyed it. Be prepared to experience this slowly Don’t rush … the story takes it time, but it gets better and better with each chapter.

Currently Reading

I’m in the middle of Honey, which is a debut from author Imani Thompson. The cover is gorgeous, and the synopsis is giving me “My Sister the Serial Killer” vibes.

I’m also listening to the audiobook of Molka, Monika Kim. “Molka” is the Korean term for hidden or miniature spy cameras secretly and illegally installed, often in order to capture voyeuristic images and videos. It’s become a pervasive problem in that culture (and probably the World) and there are several scandals and dark web sites displaying the videos.
